Welcome to the world, little one.
Parenthood is the most wild, wonderful, challenging thing you will ever do - but boy oh boy is it worth it!
I’m so honoured that you are considering me to document this journey. Whether it is your first babe, or a newest sibling for your growing family, having these early, hazy, crazy, milky days captured is something you will treasure forever.
As a mama of two little lady babies, the raw, honest, messy moments from my early days of mothering my babes are some of the most precious to me. The days begin to merge into one as you navigate feeding, sleeping and juggling life outside of your newborn bubble so I am forever grateful to have those moments frozen for us to look back on. I know you will, too.
I have a lifestyle, documentary approach to newborn/family photography - which means lots of cuddles, those sweet baby details, a little direction from me and some subtle newborn posing of your little one. Natural light is a key element in my style of shooting so I will hunt out pockets of natural light to ensure the very best outcome for your newborn and family gallery.
Scheduling your newborn session
Usually, newborn sessions take place within the first two weeks after birth. To be sure you have a spot secured for this time, it is best to organise this while you’re still pregnant.
The sweet spot for your newborn session in a routine birth is between 5-10 days after birth. At this time, your little one is still sleepy and flexible and their skin is still soft and fresh. Around 10-14 days, babies start to develop milk spots (or baby acne). They also start to become more alert and trickier to work with and achieve the beautiful images you will see on my portfolio.
If you miss the window to book your session within the first two weeks of baby’s life, don’t stress. These things happen! I recommend then waiting until baby is 5-6 weeks old. This is the most gorgeous age. The baby acne has cleared up, and skin peeling is less (or gone). They are starting to become more curious, and are starting to smile. You may not have gotten those tiny newborn moments, but you’ve got a gorgeous age documented!
The best time of day to do your session is late-mid morning to ensure plenty of natural light indoors. We will lock in a specific time once your little one is here.
Session options
I offer two options for your newborn session - Studio Sessions or At Home Sessions.
The Joy Collective Creative Studio is centrally located in the heart of heritage Sale. The space has been lovingly restored, styled and designed by me for you and yours. It blends contemporary and character features (hello, exposed brick walls!) to create a home-away-away-from home. With north facing large windows - the natural light in the space is magic.
Homely Studio Sessions are a great option if you would prefer not to have the stress of a session in your own home and are drawn to my signature style and aesthetic.
At Home Sessions are a great option for those wanting to stay within the comfort of home. All I really need to capture your newborn is some natural light so I'll be drawn to light spaces in your home. I also tend to photograph you and your new family unit in a bedroom with a big bed that everyone can pile on to. This doesn’t have to be the master bedroom - in fact, more often than not I utilise guest bedrooms as they tend to be more minimal and have less distractions for your images. I also love to capture little corners of baby's nursery (where possible). Secondary to that, I'll find pockets of magic light within your home. I'm also happy to do some shots outdoors, weather permitting.
A warm home is essential for keeping baby sleepy and happy for those solo baby portrait images. Please heat the rooms with the best light so we can keep baby happy, warm and settled. A nice clean home is always great for your session, however I realise you’ve just had a baby! There is no need to do a deep clean for your session, just make sure surfaces are tidy and unwanted clutter is put away. If you are unsure about the best spots in your house, don't worry, we can decide when I arrive.
